How many restrooms does a county fair need?
Start with your expected daily gate count, then plan for the busiest single hour, not the daily average. As a baseline, ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets one service visit per week for up to 10 users over a 40 hour week, which is built for job sites, not fairs, so a multi-day fair with thousands of daily visitors needs a servicing schedule well beyond that floor. We typically stack standard units in banks near food courts, grandstands and livestock barns, since those are where lines back up fastest. Add handwashing stations next to every food vendor row and near the animal barns separately, since fairgoers move between petting zoos and funnel cake stands all day. For a fair running Thursday through Sunday, most Charleston organizers rent by the week rather than by the day, because a weekly rental works out cheaper than four separate daily bookings once you factor delivery. Operable parts like door latches need to work with one hand and take no more than 5 pounds of force under ADA Standards section 309.4. Do fairgrounds need handwashing stations separate from the restrooms?
Yes, especially near food vendors and livestock areas, since fair food service and animal contact both call for dedicated handwashing beyond what a toilet unit provides on its own. 29 CFR 1910.141(d)(2) requires washing facilities to be stocked with soap and towels or a hand-drying device, and hand sanitizer alone doesn't meet that standard. A portable sink rental or bank of handwashing stations placed at each food row entrance covers that need without funneling everyone back to the main restroom cluster. Livestock barns are a separate case: kids and adults handling animals all day need a wash station right at the barn exit, not a hundred feet away near the restrooms. How far in advance should we book restrooms for a county fair?
